Challenge — Graz was chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2003. An international “lighthouse project” is missing in the program development.

Objective — To develop a project that draws worldwide attention to the cultural city of Graz.

Accomplishment — Elaboration of the idea and the architecture program for the “Mur Island,” curatorial selection and accompaniment of New Yorker Vito Acconci, one of the most radical contemporary artists and architects of his time.

Impact — The Mur Island is a Graz landmark today. At the opening, the Mur Island generated enormous media attention worldwide: “City-branding at its best.” Originally intended for the festival season only, the island still exists as a sustainable project due to the great public success.
